Reception
Welcome to Reception class!
We are just at the beginning of our journey at Harden Primary School and have lots to look forward to! We will make the most of every opportunity to find out more about the world around us, make new friends and explore new activities, as well as develop our literacy and numeracy skills. We also have a strong focus on developing every individual as a learner and a friend, working hard to enhance social skills and help children to engage with school life fully. We begin teaching the children all of our Harden Primary Six Ways to Shine:
The Reception class is taught by Mrs Wilkinson and Mrs Moore

Useful Information
PE Days
PE days change every half term to allow each year group to take advantage of the specialist coaches we bring in. The PE days will be shared with you on the termly newsletter.
Book Change Days:
This information is now specified on your child’s home reading journal. We ask that all children bring their books and journal to school each day.
Phonics and Number
Phonics:
Phonics is taught daily to the children using a variety of games and activities. They are also encouraged to apply the skills taught when working and playing independently. To support your child at home it would be fantastic if you encourage them to apply their phonics when they read and write at home too.
Activities you can do to help include:
– Playing eye spy (with letter sounds not names)
– Sharing stories and non-fiction books with your child, encouraging them to help you to read some parts and discussing the book with them.
– Using magnetic letters on the fridge and challenging children to spell words whilst you are cooking tea etc.
– Allowing children to help contribute to the shopping list.
– Spotting letters and common words when out and about.
– Writing labels for Lego models that they build.
– Practicing spotting and spelling the high frequency and tricky words for each phonic phase (these are in your child’s purple book)
Number:
The Early Learning Goal for number states:
Children count reliably with numbers from one to 20, place them in order and say which number is one more or one less than a given number. Using quantities and objects, they add and subtract two single-digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer. They solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing.
To support your child in achieving this goal ideas include:
– Spotting numbers in the environment, on doors, number plates, road signs, supermarket aisles
– Playing hop scotch but sometime starting with numbers 11-20
– Playing games such as snakes and ladders and dominoes
– Playing shops at home and practicing reading price labels, counting out the correct number of pennies to buy one or two items.
– Singing number rhymes.
Please also remember to email any exciting WOW moments about your child to the Reception team – reception@hardenprimaryacademy.co.uk
